Got 2 new tattoos by Manuela Gray at Wildfire in Cape Town.
Loving them :)
Photos by Dplanet, click any to view larger
I’m getting new tattoos at the end of April!
I’ve got the finger ring, the cuffs, now for the earrings: 2 words below each ear, running down my neck.
Manuela from Wildfire will be tattooing me, also my first time in South Africa as most of my previous work was done by this amazing lady in Belgium.
Looking forward to see the modifications to the base design too, will probably be simpler, but we also talked about symmetry.
Catch you in a month for an update!
PS: The calligraphy below is the reference for the tattoo, found on http://ministryoftype.co.uk/
Stunning typography blog by Aegir Hallmundur. He says:
The Ministry of Type is a weblog by me, Aegir Hallmundur, about type, typography, lettering, calligraphy and other related things that inspire me. I am a designer originally from the far north of England, now living and working in Brighton in the far south of England. I love hand-tracing and recreating old designs as vector artwork, and there are many examples of that in this site.
I’m busy designing 2 tattoos for myself, and based them on this amazing piece of typograph Aegir mentioned on his blog:
from the Herb Lubalin Collection at Cooper Union
Simply stunning!
Another stunning treatment:

Every night this week I’ve been at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town with Ben Sharpa, DJ Raiko and spo0ky, rehearsing our new collaborative project, Fourth Density Light Show (4DLS). 4DLS is a collision of freestyle underground lyrical hip hop, improvised electro-dub Robot Army Music (RAM) and analogue impulse triggered visual stimulus. Our ‘band’ consists of Ben Sharpa on vocals and Korg Kaoss Pad, me on Ableton Live and Akai APC40, DJ Raiko on Serrato and SL1200s and spo0ky on VDMX (VJing software).
These sessions are our first rehearsals together after months of planning. We first discussed the project with Ben while we were on tour in Réunion Island in June 2009. Having thought about this for so long now, it’s exciting seeing and hearing it come to life. Our first sessions are all about seeing what we can do together, so it’s a bit chaotic - but that’s just how it goes - we’ll work on polishing and tightening up once we’ve seen where we can take this.
It’s really important for us to maintain a feeling of improvisation throughout the show. So many so-called ‘live’ electronic music sets are a disappointment because there really isn’t that much improvisation - producers often just run their tracks and add a few effects. Obviously tracks need some sense of structure but there is no point going to a live show to hear music exactly the same way it was recorded. Reading the crowd and feeding from, and into, that energy is more important than getting through every track in our set list.
We don’t have plans to release this project as a recording at the moment - it’s just a live show concept. It’s possible we might release a DVD of a live show at some point, but we’ll think about that after we’ve done a few shows.
Ben and Raiko are flying out to France for the start of their latest European tour on March 1st. We’ll resume rehearsals when they come back in May. We hope to start touring 4DLS in the last quarter of 2010. To book 4DLS contact us.
Big ups to Richard and Ivan at Red Bull Studios for making us welcome and taking care of our technical needs. Check out the Red Bull Studios Cape Town blog.

‘Sweet’ (‘sweat’ in Afrikaans) is the first single from Jaak’s debut solo album, Flêtse Maniere.
Sweet is a track about the everyday struggles of the people of the Flêtse (the ghetto housing projects of the Cape Flats) - from the mundane, like remembering to buy safety pins for the baby’s nappy, to the the more substantial, like poor service delivery and crime. All these struggles make the people sweat to make ends meet whilst striving to make their dreams come true.
Directed, shot and edited by Christian Denslow & Garth von Glehn for Greenhaus Productions.
Track produced by Hipe.
Shot entirely on location in Paarl, South Africa.

VDMX Tutorial 1 from vjwunderkind on Vimeo.
vjwunderkind says:
This is a tutorial giving a quick overview of Vidvox’s great software VDMX. It was originally created for my Master students in Luxemburg but I figured I might as well share it with the rest of the world ;-) . The only problem is, I keep saying “follow the mouse” but the mouse pointer isn’t visible, so you have to listen carefully where I am going to click and watch the screen closely as well. Enjoy!
PS: The sound is a bit low
Have a break? from Greenpeace UK on Vimeo.
Nestlé, maker of Kit Kat, uses palm oil from companies that are trashing Indonesian rainforests, threatening the livelihoods of local people and pushing orang-utans towards extinction.
We all deserve to have a break - but having one shouldn’t involve taking a bite out of Indonesia’s precious rainforests. We’re asking Nestlé to give rainforests and orang-utans a break and stop buying palm oil from destroyed forests.

The brief
Show us what makes you an individual. Is it your heritage, your friends, your family? Is it what you love, your memories, your passions? Perhaps it’s the town you grew up in, or the languages you speak? It could be all of them; it could be one of them. What makes you an individual is what makes you different.
I submitted this design, made especially for the project:

And this is why it represents me:
This is a fantasy abstract self-portrait, exploring personal decoration, fashion and styling. It’s modern interpretation of tribal culture through graphic design.
I’m interested in how different cultures decorate themselves with jewelry, body markings, body modifications, patterns, piercings, masks, painting, tattoos, and headgear.
There is a lot of debate around modern African design aesthetic. I’m not claiming to know what it is or have the answer, but it is something I’m interested in exploring.
The graphic style is inspired by the bold geometric patterns, shapes and colours that are found in many traditional cultures. I also drew inspiration from the dynamism in Modernist Art.
I don’t necessarily have these ideas and academic references at the front of my mind when I design - they are just general themes I’m interested in exploring visually.
Vote for me!
and help me get in the national team of Design Superstars - your vote will influence the jury’s decision.
Thank you! :)
